What is Flash?

Adobe Flash is a website design tool that is used to build a website. It is also used to add animation and interactivity to a web page.It features technology for designing and delivering low-bandwidth animations, presentations, and Websites

However, if you have to prioritize Flash vs. HTML 5 vs. ??? … then I would put learning Flash (especially scripting in Flash) way down on priority list at this point.

Adobe is all about enabling designers and developers to create the most expressive content possible, regardless of platform or technology. For more than a decade, Flash has enabled the richest content to be created and deployed on the web by reaching beyond what browsers could do. It has repeatedly served as a blueprint for standardizing new technologies in HTML.

Some common points why Adobe’s Flash products are not allowed on iPhones, iPods and iPads.
Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash.

HTML5, the new web standard that has been adopted by Apple, Google and many others, lets web developers create advanced graphics, typography, animations and transitions without relying on third party browser plug-ins (like Flash).Flash has not performed well on mobile devices

Another Adobe claim is that Apple devices cannot play Flash games. This is true. Fortunately, there are over 50,000 games and entertainment titles on the App Store, and many of them are free. There are more games and entertainment titles available for iPhone, iPod and iPad than for any other platform in the world.

Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers.Flash on the iPad will not (and should not) happen—and the main reason is Current Flash sites could never be made work well on any touchscreen device, and this cannot be solved by Apple, Adobe, or magical new hardware. For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot. Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover. Most Flash websites will need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices. If developers need to rewrite their Flash websites, why not use modern technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript?

Drawbacks of using Flash for websites:

  • Search engines are unable to navigate through Flash websites.
  • Some users are unable to use Flash websites.
  • It lowers your site’s SEO.
  • It can cause websites to load slowly.
  • It creates large files.
  • Visitors can be lost, because, of the lengthy loading time.
  • Download time is increased.
  • Older versions of Flash do not allow back buttons to be used.
  • Older versions of Flash do not change color when links are visited.
  • Flash player must be downloaded by the user before Flash movies can be viewed.
  • Users do not favour Flash.
  • Users tend to get bored after being on the site for a while.
  • Users may enjoy the site during the first visit, however, they may not return.
  • Users are not always willing to download Flash player.
  • Sites tend to rank low in search engine results, as search engines cannot index the site content properly.

Flash has been misused and overused for the past eight years, spreading its tentacles too far into the fabric of Web design. But rather than getting beaten out of the picture by these practical new Web frameworks, Flash will retreat to its proper place: those niche areas where it belongs and can truly excel. The first niche is multimedia and learning solutions for the corporate space. Only time will tell if Flash finds its second niche on mobile platforms.

Why Flash is considered yet?

You can do some really nice work in Flash that would be difficult and sometimes impossible in HTML alone. Things like complex animations and playing video spring to mind. You can create animations without knowledge of programming for that matter.
Particularly there is no browser issue with Flash.Flash movies will work the same if the user is on Netscape or IE, on Mac or PC.

Sales presentations, Product demos, Software wizards, Interactive educational pieces, Screensavers, Calculators, “Build your own” scenarios, Training presentations, Multi-level portfolios, Advertising banners, Tradeshow loops, Animated cartoon strips and of course, animations for websites are the areas where we prefer Flash..
